Neuroblastische Tumoren (Neuroblastome, Ganglioneuroblastome und Ganglioneurome) sind Tumoren des sympathischen Nervensystems, die sich embryologisch von der Neuralleiste herleiten lassen. Histologisches Bild, Biologie und klinisches Verhalten dieser Tumoren zeigen so große Unterschiede wie bei keinem anderen soliden Tumor des Kindesalters. Während Kleinkinder mit einer metastasierten Krankheit und ungünstigen biologischen Parametern auch bei Anwendung aller therapeutischen Möglichkeiten eine 5-Jahres-Prognose von weniger als 50 % haben, können im Säuglingsalter selbst metastasierte Neuroblastome ohne jede Therapie eine spontane Regression zeigen.
Viele genetische und molekularpathologische Befunde lassen sich mit den beobachteten Verläufen korrelieren, allerdings sind die pathogenetischen Zusammenhänge weiterhin nicht vollständig verstanden Eine präzise molekulare Charakterisierung des Tumors bei Diagnosestellung ist grundlegend für eine erfolgreiche risikoadaptierte Behandlung.
