Chronic nonbacterial osteomyelitis and chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis—usual and unusual sites of affliction

European Radiology, the article by Aydıngöz et al [
1] focuses on the MRI distribution of active osteitis in patients with chronic nonbacterial osteomyelitis (CNO). The study, conducted over 15 years, involved 97 patients (55% male, 45% female) with a mean age at onset of 8.5 years. It aimed to present the distribution of active osteitis in these patients, specifically examining sites of active osteitis at various stages of the disease. The study found that the most common locations for active osteitis were the pelvis and hips (78%) and the subchondral sacrum and ilium immediately adjacent to sacroiliac joints (72%), indicating a marked presence of active sacroiliitis. This highlights the importance of MRI in diagnosing and understanding the distribution patterns of CNO. …
