Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) is a neurotropic human herpes virus responsible for the clinical manifestation of varicella (chicken pox) and herpes zoster (shingles). The latter, in particular, is due to the reactivation of the virus, which is typically observed in adults and elderly patients with risk factors including systemic disorders, neoplasms, infections, and immunosuppression.
